I'm Done!

Ok, this is the earliest, fastest I've ever completed a draft of a book yet. Now for those of you who might be jealous, I'm sorry. But I have faith in you all. Just keep at it.
While this month was, some ways, was the most emotionally brutal one yet; it was also less emotionally brutal than July in others. You may wonder how can I possibly say that? That's easy. This story that I wrote this month was far more emotional than anything I'd ever written before. It was sad. Sad, sad, sad, sad, sad. There just aren't enough sads in the world to say how sad it was. And inevitably as I tapped into my characters, I felt just how sad they were. So this is a pretty depressing draft of this story. But that's okay. Why? Because I was clearly made to write this story. I knew the beginning, middle and ending at every step of the way. I knew what I wanted to accomplish and I tapped into those emotions at every turn. I had something to say on the subject. And while I cried every day while I was writing or plotting this novel, it was just that WHILE I was writing. Outside of writing on this draft, I wasn't sad at all. In fact I felt pretty good. I definitely spent a lot of time feeling frustrated with my WIPs before.

Now I know some of you are here because you're learning about writing. I want to say to you, this is something good. I didn't have to write a book that was so sad. And given that I am an adult woman, some people out there might think I'm more than a little crazy to be so wrapped up in my story as to cry when I write it. But I tell you, this is a good thing. These are the kinds of things you can't listen to. You should feel what your character feels while you're writing it. But be careful to leave those emotions "on the page" so to speak. Have a way to come out of you work and be you. That's the difference between good writing and bad.

Now I have a preview of some things I have planned for the blog. I'm going to take some time to plan some writing basic blogs and also I have a very special treat for you. My Twitter buddy and YA novelist Adam Dreece will be here for an interview. His Yellow Hoods series is very good if you're into steam punk fantasy. I'll have a review of the first book for you by the end of the week.

Love,
Melanie
