Captor!, by Lain McIntyre
The Book
Trigger Warning!
When Sherriff Sam Robbins just wants to retire peacefully, but a deeply disturbed serial killer has other ideas. He rallies his tight-knit law enforcement family, Deputy Bobby Roberts, who I nicknamed "Deputy Do Right", Reserve Deputy Patrick and his awful smelling, carcass eating, weirdly accurate scent tracking dog Moosie whose farts are deadly, Dr Samantha Haven, the local coroner, crime scene tech Johnnie. Together they process these heinous crimes until it becomes clear they are hunting one of their own.
The police procedural is interlaced by scenes deep inside the killer's lair, and include several deeply disturbing torture and rape scenes.
My Thoughts
This book balances an incredibly difficult ask, one part psychological thriller, one part police procedural, one part puzzle mystery. If you love the horror of true crime, this novel is for you. Lain takes the reader deep inside the disturbed mind of a callous, ruthless, serial killer. The killer's chilling, first hand rationalization will give you goosebumps.
Other reviewers are wrong, this follows a puzzle mystery set up. The suspects are given to you in the beginning, and clues to the killer's identity are laid along the way, they're just incredibly subtle. Which is difficult to do in a linear plot. Masterfully done.
How Much My Library Card Saved Me
This is a book I purchased on Kindle for #IndieAugust and reviewed for a friend. It was pleasant to change things up a bit. I was going to wait to read him until the end of this project, but seeing as how it's Indie August and he would like to sell a few more copies of his book, I bumped him up the list. I will be dipping into these types of reviews more freqently once I am done with the Michael Connelly series. In the mean time, give this particular indie author a try. Pick up his book, here.
